Oakleigh’s Eaton Mall has a new shine to it thanks to a $2.75 million renovation. Covered in scaffolding and sectioned off for so long, the cultural hub is now finished and ready to welcome back its culturally diverse people.
Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship Nicholas Kotsiras launched the facelift this week, heralding the place for its inclusive nature and its heritage.
“Eaton Mall has long been one of the liveliest Mediterranean retail and food designations in Victoria, and has been used as a meeting place for the Greek community and many other migrant communities over many generations,” Mr Kotsiras said.
“This enhancement project builds upon this legacy and strengthens the use of Eaton Mall as a social space, a hub for the local community, and a place for all Victorians to come together and enjoy.”
The project was undertaken in partnership with the City of Monash, the Department of Planning and Community Development and Melbourne Water, in conjunction with the Oakleigh Traders Association.
The City of Monash is one of Victoria’s most culturally and linguistically diverse municipalities, with 44.7 per cent of residents born overseas.
“This project has built upon the Mediterranean flavour of the Eaton Mall precinct, transporting us to the great village squares and piazzas of Greece and Italy,” Mr Kotsiras said.
“However, this is also an inclusive space that welcomes the many different communities in the City of Monash with open arms, reminding us of Victoria’s strengths in balancing cultural diversity and social cohesion.”
