Last Saturday, 19-year-old Scott McLaughlin made history when he became the youngest ever winner in V8 Supercars with his Fujitsu GRM Holden in the opening race of the New Zealand event.
In the second race on Saturday afternoon, Jamie Whicup was back in the winners circle, beating home the Fords of Mark Winterbottom and Will Davison. The race wasn’t without drama as Whincup and Winterbottom came together in the last lap.
In Sunday’s last race Holden driver Jason Bright blitzed the field to take an emotional win. Bright’s triumph earned him the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy as the best overall V8 Supercar driver of the weekend at Pukekohe Park Raceway. Garth Tander came second and Jamie Whincup third to make it a Holden clean sweep on the podium.
Earlier in the day, Davison scored a rare first up win for Ford this season with victory in race three while Saturday’s young gun McLaughlin failed to finish after shunting his Commodore into a wall.
As the Nissan and Mercedes camps continue to disappoint in their inaugural year, the four race New Zealand event saw four different winners with Holden taking three victories and Ford one.
