An idea proposed by visiting professor and linguist Georgios Babinitios – on a trip to Australia last year – has seen the creation of the first centre to promote Greek culture in Australia. Former Minister of Education Robert Pearce has been appointed president of the first Centre of the Society of Friends of Greek Culture.
The organisation is aimed at strengthening the promotion, cultivation and development of Greek culture. “I call you and I invite you to go along all together and to help, not only to promote the Greek Culture, but to assist Greece to exit the European crisis which plagues the country” urged the former Minister in his heartwarming speech. About 250 people attended the gathering, including many Australian MPs, Academics and the Ambassador of Greece to Australia, Haralambos Darfarnos who was the keynote speaker of the night.
The centre was founded on May 19 at the University of Notre Dame in Perth.
