83 per cent of Neos Kosmos readers believe Australia should cut it’s ties with the English monarchy and become a republic according to the results of the Neos Kosmos poll.
The poll asked the readers Should Australia become a republic? following the Queens birthday celebrations of last week, and the results were clearly skewed towards no, with only 17 per cent of our readers believing that Australian should remain the same.
Neos Kosmos journalist Kostas Karamarkos sparked the debate in last week’s opinion piece An argument for an Australian republic. In the article he wrote:
“Without wishing to argue or to oppose the above held position, without wanting to forget the historical ties of Australia with the United Kingdom or forget the ‘British’ hegemony of this country as manifested in the language, culture, and institutions, I think the time has come for us to re-open again, with bipartisan support, the issue of Australia becoming a republic. And the issue of the republic this time needs to be placed in a twenty-first century perspective.”
