Melbourne Victory have appointed ex-Essendon chief executive Ian Robson as CEO after Richard Wilson’s decision to step down.

Robson stood down from his role at the AFL club earlier this year after admitting responsibility for the Bombers’ experimental supplements program in 2012, which is the subject of an ongoing investigation by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA).

Melbourne Victory Chairman, Anthony Di Pietro, said the club undertook a thorough process in selecting its replacement for Wilson.

“Melbourne Victory is pleased to announce Ian Robson as our new chief executive,” Di Pietro said. “Ian has global experience in sports administration roles across two codes, most recently Essendon Football Club, but also the Hawthorn Football Club, Auckland Warriors, SuperLeague and SportsScotland in the UK.”

Robson mentioned his appointment as an exciting moment to get into a “extremely competitive sporting lanscape”.

“Melbourne Victory is the benchmark of the Hyundai A-League and I’m looking forward to working with the board of directors, as well as the staff, to drive the club into new and exciting places.”
