A council of judges is to be set up in the coming days to determine if former PASOK Finance Minister Giorgos Papaconstantinou should be indicted.
In a vote in Parliament early on Tuesday, a majority of MPs proposed that he face trial.
Papaconstantinou is to be indicted for breach of faith and for altering an official document, the so called Lagarde list on tax evasion.
Speaking in parliament during the debate, the ex-finance minister of Greece denied any wrongdoing, arguing he is the victim of a smear campaign.
The five member judicial council, comprised of top judges picked by draw, is expected to be formed within the week and will decide whether or not there are adequate legal grounds for the charges brought against Papaconstantinou.
