Residents in the southeastern Athens suburbs of Iliopouli, Alimos, Argyroupoli and Elliniko were connected to the wider Athens metro network when four new metro stations were opened to the public last Friday.

The stations were completed two years ago, but work on their signalling systems was frozen as a result of a corruption scandal involving the contractor, Siemens.

The German electronics giant was found to have bribed various government officials over the course of a decade. In 2012, Siemens reached a €270 million settlement with the Greek government.

The opening of the new stations – all on the Red Line 2 – will bring changes to the routes and timetables of a number of bus lines serving the suburbs.
