Five weeks after his return to the leadership of the Australian Labor Party and the Prime Ministership of the country, Kevin Rudd announced Sunday a federal election for September 7. The date was announced via an email to supporters, beginning with the phrase: “It’s on”.
Addressing the nation on national media he said “The time has come for the Australian people to decide on our nation’s future ”
The Opposition responded by saying it has been ready to campaign and to fight this election for months.
As a result of the September 7 election, the planned referendum on the constitutional status of local governments will not go ahead.
Political analysts and pollsters claim that the outcome of the election is wide open.
