Greece’s Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said he will not let neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn “undermine” democracy.
The comments came after a Golden Dawn supporter allegedly admitted killing an anti-fascist activist and musician Pavlos Fyssas.
“This government is determined not to let the descendants of the Nazis poison our social life or commit crimes,” Mr Samaras said in a national TV address.
On Wednesday, thousands protested in a rally at the spot where Mr Fyssas was
killed in Athens. In the evening, violence broke out when youths set fire to rubbish bins,
broke up paving stones and threw pieces at police, who fired volleys of tear
gas. There were also clashes at demonstrations in the cities of Thessaloniki and
Patras.
