A decision by the Ministries of Administrative Reform and Education is to lead in the loss of 1,349 job posts in eight Greek universities.
These 1,349 job losses will come from the National an Kapodistrian University of Athens, the National Technical University of Athens, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the Athens University of Economics, the University of Patra, the University of Thessaly, the University of Ioannina and the University of Crete.
The Universities have universally condemned the decision, stating that the institutions will be unable to function, since many of the jobs abolished are essential for their day-to-day operation.
Education Minister Constantinos Arvanitopoulos and Administrative Reform Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis have decided to abolish all guards and night guards in all institutions (aside from the University of Economics) and computer operators at the Technical
University of Athens. Most other jobs abolished are administrative staff, caretakers, curators etc.
After the publication this week in the government gazette of the official decision to abolish these job posts, the governing bodies of the Universities affected have decided to appeal to justice, claiming that the Ministers’ interventions are unconstitutional, since
they conflict with the self-administration of the universities.
Furthermore, one after another the tertiary institutions affected by this decision suspend their administrative and teaching activities. The senate of Ioannina University decided on Wednasday to suspend all administrative and teaching activities until Monday, following in the steps of Athens University, the Athens University of Economic and Business, Thessaloniki’s Aristotle University and the pedagogical faculty of the University of Thessaly.
