In the early hours of the morning, Greek Australian fans couldn’t contain themselves as Greece managed to secure a ticket to the World Cup in 2014.

Manly hugs and waving flags blanketed venues showing the match around Australia, with most major cities hosting a live viewing.

It took just a 1-1 draw and the solid 3-1 win on Friday to earn the Greek team a spot in Brazil.

Thousands of fans got a double dose of World Cup fever as the Socceroos managed to secure their first win under the tutelage of new coach Ange
Postecoglou. They gave a packed Allianz stadium something to cheer about, with a 1-0 win against Costa Rica.

Australia will now join Greece in Brazil and is the third time Greece has managed to qualify for the World Cup.

Greece played Romania surrounded by 50,000 Romanian fans, desperately hoping to see their team finally make it to the World Cup. It wasn’t meant to be, as Greece managed to keep most of the possession and secured their winning goal in the first 15 minutes thanks to Costa Mitroglou.

Romania’s own goal that Vassilis Torosidis scored early in the second half was not enough to put the Romanians back into the game.

Romania grew frustrated as the game went on and the well organised Greek defence had them fuming on home soil.

This will be the fifth major tournament Greece has qualified to in the last 10 years, after playing at Euro 2004, Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012.
