The City of Monash council has overturned last year’s decision to erase ‘Merry Christmas’ from all municipal signage and decorations and replace it with the wishes ‘Season’s Greetings’.
The south-eastern suburbs council has now decided to embrace both slogans during this year’s festive season.
The new policy was said to be a win for common sense in the view of Cr Theo Zographos.
“We shouldn’t hide away from ‘Merry Christmas’, that’s political correctness gone mad,” he said.
“It caused an uproar last year – myself and other councillors received hundreds of emails, letters, phone calls and other contacts over the issue.”
Both the City of Casey and Greater Dandenong Councils will be committing to the celebration of Christmas, including the slogan in their decorations.
“We’ve got feedback from the community that they would like ‘Merry Christmas’ and I and all my fellow councillors believe it should be on there,” said Dandenong Mayor Jim Memeti.
