The 50th Anniversary of The Greek Orthodox Community of Oakleigh and District was celebrated last Sunday with a memorial service, alongside the 30th anniversary of the Oakleigh Grammar school.
His Grace, Bishop Iakovos of Militoupolis presided over a Memorial Service where the Community collectively prayed for its forefathers. The service was followed by a formal luncheon and ceremony to honour those within the Community for their service beyond 20 years, and on behalf of many to say “thank you”.
The group of community forefathers, now mostly aged and frail, over the years toiled and sacrificed to leave a legacy of Greek Orthodox faith and Hellenism for their children, grandchildren and all children, not expecting anything in return.
During the afternoon, the three surviving founders of the Community, Mr Con Papadopoulos, Mr Athanasios Rovolidis and Mr Dimitrios Zafiropoulos shared their personal memories including the first gathering arranged to establish the Community, feelings in relation to the Community 50 years later and aspirations for its future. The captivating and loving way in which they shared their remarkable stories made an emotional impact on the audience, and there weren’t many dry eyes in the room..
Before the official presentation of certificates to the proud and emotional inductees by His Grace Bishop Iakovos, the sponsors of the event Mr Anthony Varsamis and Mr Jim Samarniotis were acknowledged and together with His Grace Bishop Iakovos unveiled the Honour Boards.
In years to come the Memorial Service will be held annually, followed with ongoing annual inductions for those members meeting the basic criteria of 20 years of service.
