A Dimitri Petratos hat-trick helped Brisbane Roar maintain its place at the top of the A-League ladder with a 5-2 win against Sydney FC at Sydney Football Stadium.

Petratos moved to Brisbane from Sydney in the off-season and on Thursday night he set about showing his former club what they were missing.

Sydney opened the scoring after 11 minutes when Allessandro Del Piero converted a free kick from just outside the box.

Brisbane levelled the scores when Thomas Broich finished some good lead-up work from Luke Brattan to slot home a shot just inside the left post in the 20th minute.

Three minutes later, Henrique was brought down inside the box and the Roar was awarded a penalty.

Petratos scored from the spot but was forced to re-take the kick. It had little effect as he calmly slotted the next attempt.

Petratos then ensured Brisbane put themselves well on top in the 35th minute when he finished some brilliant Roar lead-up work, with Broich throwing the final pass.

Brisbane continued to make inroads into the Sydney defence and capitalised when Broich was brought down in the box and the Roar was awarded another penalty.

Petratos stepped forward and slotted home the goal for his third of the night.

Ivan Franjic then completed the rout for Brisbane when he finished some good lead-up work by man-of-the-moment Petratos in the 93rd minute.

Sydney gained some consolation when Richard Garcia cleaned up a fumble by Brisbane keeper Michael Theo in the 94th minute.

Brisbane: 5 (Broich 20′, Petratos 23′, 35′, 77′, Franjic 93′)
Sydney FC: 2 (Del Piero 11′, Garcia 94′)
