The giant observation Melbourne Star Wheel opened for the second time on December 22 and welcomed its first visitors: the Greek expatriate Saul Balnionis, along with his wife Alissa and their sons Lukas and Nikolas.

“Wherever you look, the view of Melbourne is breathtaking”, said the 8 year old Nikolas.

The Melbourne Star Wheel is the fifth largest in the world and the first solid steel wheel design to be built in the world of this size.

Reaching a height of 120 metres, it is equivalent to a 40-storey building and with its 21 fully enclosed air-conditioned glass cabins it can offer guests a 360 degree view of Melbourne.

Apart from the 30 minute ride, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy a range of other features, including a multimedia display of the history of Melbourne and function spaces.

The state government of Victoria and the city of Melbourne are optimistic about the future of the Wheel and its potential to attract a great tourist inflow in the Docklands.

According to media reports however, since the re-opening, at least one member of the public has raised a safety issue that is currently under investigation by the Victorian Workcover Authority.
