In tennis all that matters is ranking, and Ted (Theodoros) Angelinos is proving himself a force to be reckoned with.

In just three years, he’s gone from a world ranking of 850, to 251 this year. He will be a wild card in this year’s Australian Open and the 29-year-old is ready for his first ever Grand Slam.

Touching down in Melbourne last week, Angelinos will be battling next week to get a qualifying spot for the Australian Open.

He will find Today who he will be up against, and has his first match on Wednesday January 8.

It has been a long term dream of his to break into the top tier of tennis, something many Greeks have failed to achieve.

Cypriot tennis star, Marcos Baghdatis, has failed to live up to his former glory, and is nursing an injury that will most probably restrict him from entering the Aussie grand slam.

His underdog performance in 2006, where he reached the final against former number one, Roger Federer, is starting to feel like a distant memory.

Yet, sitting at 87 on the world ATP ranking, he has done enough to keep himself alive in the tennis world.

Angelinos still has a lot of solid work ahead of him to get a winning edge against the current top seeds.

Outside of the grand slam world, Ted has been boosting his ATP ranking by honing his skills in Greek tournaments and also trains as a member of the Greek national team.

He has also competed in the Futures Tennis Circuit around the world, winning six singles tournaments: two in Greece, and one in Turkey, Bulgaria, Brazil, Qatar and Colombia, and has participated in the Davis Cup competition on a number of occasions.
