Two Melbourne Greek Australian families are mourning the death of a husband and wife and the critical condition of their son after their car was struck down by a speeding driver as well as the passengers of the vehicle – also related – who are in a stable but serious condition. The families were travelling home from a wedding when they were struck down at the intersection of Dandenong and Warrigal Road, Oakleigh.
The couple Savvas and Imini Meneloa were instantly killed and their son Menaloas Menelos is in a critical condition in the Royal Alfred Hospital. The passenges Elias Mesiridis is in a stable condition and 29-year-old Maria Mesiridis is in a stable but serious condition at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
The driver of the vehicle, a 29-year-old Nei Lima DaCosta of Richmond, that survived, was using excessive speed. The driver is now in police custody and has managed to escape serious injuries. He has faced seven charges in connection to the triple fatality.
Another person died as a result of the speeding driver when he was crossing Dandenong Road in Oakleigh. Police say a 45-year-old man was crossing Dandenong Road in Oakleigh on a green light when he was hit by the white Kia hatchback about 11.40pm (AEDT) on Sunday.
Family members of the dead and injured were calmed by police outside the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said, “this is yet another example of road trauma that was avoidable… were people make the wrong choices on our roads act irresponsible and as a consequence, people die.”
