Super League club Olympiakos has condemned the verbal racist attack against their player Gaetan Bong from Xanthi fans on the weekend.

“Olympiakos, in response to the verbal racist attack against our player Gaetan Bong by individual fans at the Xanthi stadium, strongly condemns this event and any corresponding behavior,” a statement by the club said.

Bong, a 25-year-old French-Cameroonian left back, wrote on his instagram site: “Tonight I heard monkey chants in the Xanthi public, but in the end I had a hard time hearing them because they had bananas in their mouths.”

Olympiakos remained unbeaten in the Super League on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over Xanthi.

Bong joined Olympiakos this season and has played in 10 matches so far.

He previously played for Valenciennes, Tours and Metz and is a member of the Cameroon national team playing in 13 matches since 2010

A similar incident happened with AFL player Adam Goods, who was called an ape by a 13-year-old girl during a match last year.
