Olympian Lydia Lassila (nee Ierodiaconou) is hot favourite to be Australia’s flag bearer in the Sochi opening ceremony tomorrow.

Lassila won gold in aerial skiing at the Vancouver Olympics and is back again despite a two year halt to become a mum and is hoping to keep her title.

Arriving in Russia on Wednesday, Lassila says she hasn’t been approached by the Australian Olympic Committee on the matter of who will hold the flag, but says the person picked won’t know till the day of.

She has made no secret of her wish to lead the Australian contingent out of the stadium.

“To be able to lead our best team ever would be great, I’d be honoured to do it,” she said

Sports bookies at least have her as favourite, with odds at $1.30 with some betting agencies.

The second favourite is Alex “Chumpy” Pullin, the dual snowboard cross World Champion.

Lassila has been in her husband’s hometown in Poland training before the games, in -25 degree weather.
