Lucas Neill has finally signed to a club, desperate to start training and playing to get on Socceroo’s coach Ange Postecoglou’s eye.
Despite his talks with Sydney’s second tier team Sydney Olympic, the Socceroo decided to sign to England Championship team Watford.
Neill has signed on till the end of the season, but might have options till 2015 if he gets international clearance. He has been without a club since Decemeber, after leaving Japanese outfit Omiya Ardija.
He has admitted he’s unsure if his return to English football will be enough to earn him a spot in Postecoglou’s squad for the World Cup warm-up match against Ecuador.
“I’m not going to read too much into it, whether I’m in or out,” Neill said to Fox Sports about getting a call up.
“I know I need game time, as do a lot of other players who are just about to start a season. So there’s no need for me to panic at the moment.
It’s cold comfort for Sydney Olympic, as the Greek sponsored club jumped to have the capped player on their team.
In a sad message on their facebook page, Sydney Olympic said “the Club has lost the race to sign Lucas Neill with the Socceroos”.
The club says they are still in talks with Greek international Angelos Charisteas, pending leave for his military service.
Now Neill will be looking towards making a fast impression in the hopes of playing in his third World Cup.
