Organised by the 32nd Greek Festival of Sydney in conjunction with the Hellenic Lyceum, Hellenic costume of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries exhibition – Hellenic Threads: Discovering the Diversity – will be presented in Sydney from 8 March to 5 April.

In the ancient land whose long cultural history has been influenced by the great Empires which had occupied her before 1821, it was the War of Independence in the early nineteenth century that gave birth to the modern Hellenic identity.

Since around that time, Greeks have settled in Australia. Amongst the cultural accoutrements they brought with them were traditional dress, jewellery and decorative arts. This exhibition explores the diversity in dress and jewellery, which thread together the cultural history of Hellas and the Hellenes who came to Australia.
