Peter Yiallouris, a prominent member of the Greek community in Melbourne, passed away last week at the age of 90.
Born in Ayia Napa, Limassol, Peter, a Second World War veteran, migrated to Australia in 1950. He served the Cyprus Community of Melbourne and Victoria as a president or as an office bearer for more than 30 years. Peter was a founding member of the Federation of the Greek Senior Citizens Clubs, a founding member of the Justice for Cyprus Committee (SEKA) and a lifelong long supporter of the Australian Greek Welfare Society. He was also a contributor for the establishment of the Fair Go for Pensioners Coalition, an Australia wide organisation fighting for the rights of senior citizens.
For his contributions to the Greek Australian community and the wider community Peter Yiallouris was honoured with an OAM. He also won the acclaim of the government of Cyprus and of the Greek and Cypriot Australian Community of Melbourne and Victoria.
