I’d like to send my best wishes for the celebration of Greek National Day
We celebrate the independence of one of the oldest, proudest and most loved migrant communities in Australia.
This national day commemorates the long and painful struggle for Greek independence that spanned the decade from 1821- 1832, which is in itself a testimony to the courage and perseverance of the Greek people and their spirit of freedom.
We can all be inspired by the legendary figures of that struggle such as Theodoros Kolokotronis, a great unifying figure and leader who never wavered in the face of setbacks and challenges.
It is also a celebration of how much Australia has grown and gained from its embrace of multiculturalism.
It was Socrates who said that he was not a citizen of Athens ¬– or Greece – but a citizen of the world.
And ever since, all the millions of members of the great Hellenic diaspora have lived up to that sentiment.
You have shown an inspiring ability to balance pride in your heritage and the land of your ancestors, with a deep love for the new country you have made your home.
An incredible 97 per cent of Greek immigrants go on to take up Australian citizenship.
Easily the highest of any of the hundreds of migrant communities that have made their home here.
A fact that reflects your respect for the duties and obligations of citizenship – and your powerful sense of belonging.
Every one of you has helped make Australia a better, brighter and more interesting place – we are lucky to have you.
