Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou says despite Mark Schwarzer’s call up for Chelsea in the Champions League, he won’t be on his list for the World Cup.
“Mark made his decision and we’ve moved on pretty quickly,” Postecoglou said this week.
“We’ve got a number of outstanding young goalkeepers in our ranks as it is.”
“It’s great to see Mark getting the chance to play but maybe the fact that he’s retired from international duty is why he’s still able to do it.
“Being in the national team is a pretty demanding schedule.
“Mark made the wise decision that if he’s going to have a year or two more in domestic football he won’t have the 24-hour long-haul flights that go with international duty.”
The former Socceroo goalkeeper debuted for Chelsea during its Champions League draw with Atletico Madrid after Chelsea goalkeeper had to leave his post
after suffering a dislocated shoulder.
At 41, Schwarzer became the oldest player to feature in the knockout stages of the Champions League.
“It was great. I really enjoyed the experience, I really enjoyed the game. Even at 41 you can still experience something new so to play a Champions League semi-final was great,” he said.
Schwarzer is signed to Chelsea for one year as a replacement for Petr Čech but has barely featured on the team since his move from Fulham.
Now he will feature in some of Chelsea’s most important and interesting encounters, starting with a Premier League title-deciding game with Liverpool on the weekend and taking on the second leg of the Champions League draw with Atletico Madrid.
