State Member for Perth, Ms Eleni Evangel MLA, welcomed this week the announcement by the Western Australian Liberal-National Government that a new $20.3 million fire and rescue station will be built to the west of the Perth Central Business District (CBD) to meet the needs of the growing city.
In a pre-Budget announcement, Emergency Services Minister Joe M. Francis said that with an additional 15,000 residential dwellings expected in Perth’s inner city over the next 10 years, a new modern and capacity built fire and emergencies station was imperative.
“The rate at which Perth is growing is truly amazing and very rapid. We see numerous new dwellings already built in the City, we see new developments go up on a regular basis, and this isn’t likely to slow down any time soon.
Moreover, with major infrastructure projects such as Perth City Link, Elizabeth Quay and Riverside Drive, not only will we see an increase in numbers of residents, but also a huge increase in the number of daily visitors to the CBD. This will all add a greater demand on emergency services, and I wholeheartedly welcome this new fire and rescue station to service the City,” said Ms Evangel.
A suitable site for the new station is being evaluated. The fire and rescue station is expected to become operational in 2016-17.
