For more than 35 years, Orion Hellas Shipping has been transporting household goods from Australia to Greece, ensuring Greek migrants had the comforts of their old home in their new home. But now, with so many new migrants arriving each week, they are doing more to keep up with the demands of this transporting business.
Along with the personal, Orion Hellas allows trade between Greece and Australia to evolve by facilitating the transportation of Greek products. They were one of the first companies to work alongside warehouses and delis stocking products for Greeks of the diaspora. Items such as trahanas, friganies, Dodoni feta, olive oil have been delivered to Australia through Orion Hellas.
“During the ’80s and ’90s we were covering 70 per cent of Greek products coming from Greece to Australia,” says George Constantatos. From carpets, to foods, to picture frames – whatever the person wanted transported from their home was pretty much covered by this company.
“The core idea is for any small businessman who has developed the idea of importing a product that he saw in Greece while on holidays or has thought of, we as a company give him the opportunity to bring this product here at low cost,” Mr Constantatos tells Neos Kosmos.
“What’s more, we can help them research the product that is on the market and if they don’t know where to find this product in Greece, we help them locate it.”
He says this enables the business to expand in the future, but also collaborate with new Greek Australians in keeping their ties with the motherland.
Founded in 1978, Orion Hellas first served as a way to transport household appliances from Australia to Greece for new migrants. From 1980 onwards, the company’s main business activity saw them expand in the area of exporting Greek products to Australia using the medium of air, ship and road.
“We collaborate with major operators in Europe, facilitating our connection with countries all around Europe and the Balkans, Greece being the common denominator,” says Mr Constantatos.
“Through meeting the needs of the market and conducting the relevant research – of the market – based on the customer’s requirements, we are able to provide transporting solutions, so that the products reach their destination on time, whether it is a collection or selling point,” he adds.
