Thanasi Kokkinakis has been awarded a wildcard place into the qualifying draw at the French Open. He will be selected to qualify for the main draw of the claycourt Grand Slam, beginning Sunday 25 June.

The 18-year-old has had a stellar couple of months of late, achieving his career best win when he defeated top 100 player, Michael Russell at the German Challenger Tournament.

He defeated the American third seed in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals in the claycourt event in Neckarcup.

At 36, Russell is twice the age and vastly more experienced, but Kokkinakis crushed the American on his favourite surface.

The world No. 93 was his first top-100 scalp since beating Dutchman Igor Sijsling in the first round of the Australian Open in January.

At the moment, Kokkinakis is on a five-match winning streak and since January, he has slashed his ranking by almost 200 places.

If he qualifies for the French Open, he will be playing alongside his doubles partner and fellow Greek Australian, Nick Kyrgios.
