Melbourne City has somewhat supplemented the loss of Spanish star David Villa this week, announcing that they have signed Socceroo Josh Kennedy as their Australian marquee on a two year deal.
The only downside is the team won’t be able to use him until January after his contract ends with Japanese side Nagoya Grampus.
Kennedy’s prolific scoring has been a significant factor in Nagoya achieving its first ever J-League title and Kennedy winning the J-League’s Golden Boot award, but a Melbourne call back seemed the right fit.
“After a very long period abroad, the timing is right to join Melbourne City and I’m very excited about this project,” he said.
“It’s a new chapter in my career, but my goal will be the same – to help my club achieve all of its aspirations. I believe Melbourne City has huge potential.”
His scoring ability will be sorely needed, after City has only managed to net most of their goals form Villa’s heroics.
They lost 1-2 last week to an on fire Adelaide United despite leading the match with a Patrick Kisnorbo goal at the 9th minute.
United then showed why the club has been able to retain its unbeaten run by scoring their first goal out of nowhere and sealing the win with a penalty shot.
The take on a fellow unbeaten team, Sydney FC on Friday night.
Top of the table Melbourne Victory take on Newcastle Jets in Saturday night’s blockbuster and seems to be the favourite to clinch the win.
Victory made it two wins in a row after they comfortably beat Wellington Phoenix 2-0, with the last goal going to former Bentleigh Greens boy Connor Pain.
The Jets didn’t have as much luck as they fell at the hands of Perth Glory away 2-1.
Ending proceedings will be incumbent champions, Brisbane Roar who take on Melbourne City on Sunday.
The Roar have had a horror start to the season and are the only team to have lost all their games.
But, this week they come off a week long rest but know expectations will be high.
Striker Thomas Broich has called for patience and placed his belief in the new team.
“It’s easy to criticise after three losses but that’s unfair,” he said.
“We are still a good team, we still have good players.
“All we need to do is not beat ourselves up and more than anything stay positive and passionate.”
No A-League team has claimed back-to-back championships after losing their first three matches.
