The conservative-led government does not intend to resist or negotiate the troika’s demands, leftist opposition leader Alexis Tsipras has said while repeating calls for an early general election.
Addressing his party’s parliamentary group this week, Tsipras said that the government’s understanding of negotiations is to make “concessions to domestic interests and the German leadership.”
“A SYRIZA government will accept neither the prior actions nor the actions which are being presented as fait accompli,” he said adding that the government would last until February’s presidential election.
New Democracy and PASOK need 180 votes in Parliament to choose a new president to succeed Karolos Papoulias. If they fail, a snap poll will be held and SYRIZA is in pole position to win.
