The remains of the famous Athenian “Long Walls” have been desecrated by vandals spray painting football slogans on the ancient site.
The walls were built after Xerxes’ invasion of Greece (480-479 BC) in order to connect Athens to its ports at Piraeus and Phalerum. Thankfully, Greek Culture Ministry maintenance staff were able to painstakingly remove the graffiti and restore the site.
Days earlier, an ancient prison southwest of the Acropolis -a site where philosopher Socrates was sent after his sentence- was also targeted.
The vandalism happened after the Greek Council of State allowed for free 24 hour access to various archaeological sites.
The sites’ security guards fear staff shortages will mean these act of vandalism will continue.
