More than 10 Greek councillors from across Australia will meet with Greek Ambassador to Australia Haris Dafaranos in between talks with federal politicians.
Attending the annual Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) national assembly on June 15-16 in Canberra, a number of Greek Australian councillors will take the opportunity to discuss Greek issues like language retention and ways Councils can help retain cultural ties.
This will be the second year the group will meet with the Ambassador, after Manningham City Council’s Jim Grivokostopoulos decided to get in contact with all the councillors of Greek decent. It’s a rare chance for councillors to lobby federal politicians on issues their districts are facing. After missing last year’s event, Moreland City Council’s Lambros Tapinos will be heading to Canberra for the talks and hopes to get some advice on how his highly Greek populated district can retain its heritage.
There are close to 560 councils across the country that are a part of ALGA, with many hoping to send at least one representative to the assembly.
