The top 279 students from the 2014 Victorian Certificate of Education were recognised in a ceremony at the Melbourne Convention Centre this week, and seven of those youthful high-achievers were from the Greek Australian community.
Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Education James Merlino joined the Governor of Victoria, the Honourable Alex Chernov, to make the presentations.
For Greek langauge, Georgios Mylonopoulos (St Johns Greek Orthodox College) was ranked as the subject’s best student. Maria Nomikoudis (Caufield Grammar) won the health and human development award, James Papadopoulos (St Kevin’s College) won the legal studies award, Marie Papadopoulos (Loreto Mandeville) was top of the class for psychology, and James Pallasis (Westbourne Grammar) won the mathematical methods award.
Other students showed outstanding merit in the field of arts, with Stephanie Gatonis (Haileybury Girls College) claiming top spot for music investigation, and Laura Aldous (Ruyton Girls School) landing an award for drama.
Premier of Victoria Daniel Andrews said the students’ achievements showed that “these young men and women have an opportunity to shape and change our society for the better. They’ve worked hard and given themselves the best start”.
State Minister for Education James Merlino added that the students were great examples of Victoria as “the ‘Education State’ – working hard, receiving support and reaching their potential”.
