The Greek Orthodox Church and Community of Newcastle, will present a unique piece of marble from the island of Thasos in Greece to the Novocastrians on Sunday, 9 August.
This particular type of marble is extremely valuable and resilient as it is considered to be the only pure marble on the planet.
Acclaimed artist Roger McFarlane, will use it to create a monument dedicated to the awareness and resilience of people who struggle with mental health illness and their families in our community.
McFarlane’s sculptures are exhibited in many countries around the world and he has created monuments in China, South Korea, Brazil and Switzerland.
Attending the ceremony will be the Consul of Greece, Mr. Geoff Antoniades, the Rector of the Orthodox Church of Newcastle, Fr Nicholas Scordilis, the President of the Community Mr Paul Milonas, as well as other distinguished guests and members of the community.
