Last week the Greek Orthodox Community of South Australia celebrated 85 years since its operation, but the best is yet to come, with Adelaide’s Hellenic Cultural Festival ‘Odyssey’ just around the corner.
In the true spirit of philoxenia (this year’s theme), the festival opening will take place on Friday 9 October at 6.30 pm at the GOCSA’s Olympic Hall, and will conclude on Saturday 31 October 2015.
“Philoxenia in essence means an act of hospitableness and welcome, with its core being generosity of spirit,” says GOCSA’s president, Mr Bill Gonis OAM.
Celebrating its tenth year, the festival will provide a variety of events and experiences focusing on health and social issues, including a lecture on dementia and its impact on society on Wednesday 21 October. In addition, a forum on all aspects of migration to Australia for potential residents of South Australia will take place on Wednesday 14 October.
The GOCSA dance academy will present Hues of Hellenic Song and Dance, a showcase of dances from various regions on Saturday 21 October. Classic Greek cinema will be shown, with a double screening of Eagles of The Enslaved with adored actor Nikos Xanthopoulos, and A Crazy, Crazy 40-year-old, featuring the late legendary actress Rena Vlahopoulou (Sunday 18 October).
A music concert is scheduled for Saturday 24 October as well as a ‘Sunday Souvlaki Sesh’ presented by GOCSA youth on Sunday 11 October.
