Software juggernaut Microsoft claims to have created software that is able to detect people’s moods and emotions through their body language.

The apps’ technology recognises specific mannerisms, which it then uses to deconstruct an interpretation of the person’s emotions from a photo.

Whilst the company claims its new technology is “not always accurate”, it says it can measure up to eight emotions: happiness, sadness, contempt, anger, fear, surprise, neutrality and disgust.

Microsoft’s senior program manager at its Technology and Research group said the new app was gathering a lot of attention.

“The exciting thing has been how much interest there is and how diverse the response is,” he said.

The new feature is part of Microsoft’s Project Oxford.
