Primarily based in the United States, Tesla has been expanding abroad over the past few years to the United Kingdom and Germany, and next on the automaker’s list is Greece.

The company will be setting up a small research and development office in Athens with a view to develop new electric motor technologies that will comprise of a highly qualified engineering team, a Tesla spokesperson revealed in an interview with Elektrek.

“This team will focus solely on limited research and development activities to accelerate electric motor technology development through close collaboration with our team in the US,” the spokesperson added.

“Greece has strong electric motor engineering talent and technical universities, offering tailored programs and specialised skills for electric motor technology.” And Tesla knows this first-hand.

Three of their top electric motor designers were educated at the National Technical University of Athens; Principal Motor Designer Konstantinos Laskaris, Motor Design Engineer Konstantinos Bourchas, and Staff Motor Design Engineer Vasilis Papanikolaou. Now they are looking to further explore the talent pool by setting up locally, starting on a small scale with 10 engineers.
