A far-right group in Greece has claimed responsibility for an arson attack carried out on an Afghan community centre in Athens on Thursday.

The group, which is going by the name of ‘Krypteia’, acknowledged its role in the attack in a statement issued to Greek media on Friday.

Flammable liquid was poured over the door of the centre, and set on fire causing severe damage to the building and belongings inside the centre. No people were hurt in the attack.

Following the incident, the Afghan community issued a statement of its own, dubbing the incident an “incendiary fascist attack”.

It is the second attack on the centre in recent years; the first was carried out in 2011 during a children’s Greek-language lesson.

The incident follows the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination observed annually on 21 March. It is one of a series of attacks that have been carried out by right-wing groups in Greece so far this year.
