The Society of Kalamata ’23 March’ cordially invites Melburnians to the 77th anniversary of the Battle of Kalamata this Sunday at 12.30 pm.
This year’s commemoration service for the solace of their families in Greece, Australia, New Zealand, Britain, Cyprus, Israel, and India will be at the Australian Hellenic Memorial in the Domain Gardens on the corner of Birdwood Avenue and Government House Drive, Melbourne.
The event will be held in memory of the Greek, Serbian, Jewish, Cypriot, Indian, British, Australian, and New Zealand women and men in the field, on the sea and in the air who fought and sacrificed their lives in the defence of Greece.
“Tell them we were here,” was the call that went out across Kalamata, as the last embarkation boats rowed away, leaving 8,000 allied troops on the beaches of Kalamata to make their way home.
The service will also be in remembrance of those who were taken prisoners during the Battle of Kalamata, 28 – 29 April 1941, or who escaped to fight again that the world might be free and in thanks to the Hellenic people who gave aid and assistance to the Commonwealth troops in their efforts to avoid capture.
