The Women’s Committee of the Greek Democritus League is hosting an event on Sunday 1 July, launching a campaign to change legislation for repeat criminal offenders.

Presented by City of Brimbank councillor Georgina Papafotiou, a petition, which will need 10,000 signatures, will be addressed to the Legislative Assembly, requesting harsher penalties for repeat criminal offenders, and the review of current intervention orders.

Cr Papafotiou had shared her personal experience as a victim of crime at a previous Democritus Women event on International Women’s Day (IWD) in March, which resulted in several victims coming forward and supporting her goals. Apart from the petition, Cr Papafotiou aims to use her position and voice in the community to establish a Violence Crisis Support Centre for all victims of any form of violence.

Joining Cr Papafotiou on Sunday will be Dr Helen Kalaboukas, who was also part of the IWD event in her capacity as a psychologist, offering insight on domestic violence, and how it is dealt with by women today.

Democritus calls for all community organisations, clubs and other community groups to attend and actively participate in the discussion to improve safety laws in our community by assisting to collect signatures for the petition.

The event takes place on Sunday 1 July at 2.15 pm at the Democritus Cultural Centre of Dimokritos (583 High St, Northcote, VIC).
