As part of a new initiative by the Greek government, bus drivers are being requested to only open the front door of the bus to let passengers in, in a bid to crack down on fare evaders. By doing so, drivers will be able to check each individual’s ticket.
While a simple concept, in doing so, an extra layer of pressure is being placed upon the underpaid employees, who are already faced with difficult working conditions.
Of late, bus schedules have been cut back, resulting in large crowds waiting at certain stops. There is concern that the rule will only mean even further delays for commuters who are in a hurry to get to their destination.
With that in mind, it makes sense that some drivers still insist on opening the middle and back doors for the public to get on the bus.
To create greater incentive for drivers in the attempt to crack down on stowaways, the government is offering financial incentives to those drivers that actually comply with the new rules.
Regardless, it is difficult to imagine such a rule having much longevity.
