In the wake of the national tragedy Greece is experiencing following the wildfires, Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Smartraveller has updated its advice for travellers in the aftermath.
With bush and forest fires occurring in Greece during the summer months between June and September, they suggest staying up-to-date by calling the Greek Tourist Police (in Greece) on 1571, or in the case of a fire, to call emergency services as soon as possible on 112.
Along with the timely emphasis on fire safety, they also recommend that visitors be particularly wary of petty theft, particularly in tourist areas, and around luggage.
Drink spiking is also a concern, with the majority of cases being reported on popular islands such as Mykonos, Santorini, and Ios.
Meanwhile, staying clear of protests is also recommended, giving the current likelihood of civil unrest.
The travel advisory update is a move in the right direction when it comes to fire emergencies in Greece. But with fires having transpired a number of times, the question lingers as to why there is no adequate system in place to prevent them from getting out of hand.
