Following the deadly fires in Mati, Attiki last week, municipality demolition crews began an operation to knock down a fence that was blocking access.

The operation took place in the area of Kassandra, Halkidiki yesterday morning the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA) radio station Praktorio 104.9 FM reported.

Speaking top the radio station, Deputy Mayor Thomas Kontos said that the demolition would take more time that what was initially expected as there were many factors obstructing the crew.

“Work is going smoothly but it’ll take some time because there were bushes, barbed wire and also concrete in places that needed to be removed carefully,” he told Praktorio.

“Municipal authorities are continuing inspections to locate more spots where intervention is needed to comply with the law.”

More specifically, safety regulation laws stipulate that there must be access to the beach every 300-350 metres.

In the specific spot, there was no opening giving access from the heavy forested inland to the water for over 800 metres.
