A tireless and sharp papou from Crete has made his lifetime dream real by getting accepted to Greece’s History and Archaeology university faculty in Rethymno, Crete.

Dimitris Moudatsakis, 84, has been a retiree for over 18 years and since a very young age he wanted to complete his education.

Moudatsakis was one of the thousands of university entrance exam candidates in Greece but got into his department of choice with flying colours.

“I’ve wanted to study from a young age! I watched the other kids go to school and I was envious of them,” he told local media CretaLive on Monday after receiving the good news.

“I wanted to go too, but I couldn’t. I didn’t have the chance.”

Moudatsakis, however -even though he could not afford a proper education- made it his life’s purpose to never stop learning.

He worked his way into bookbinding and printing so that he could read as much as he could.

“I was always reading. Every Saturday, when the staff were paid, I went and bought a book, which I read straight away,” he said.

As for moving to the city of Rethymno in order to attend classes, he believes it will be a work in progress.

“I will go to register normally and will go whenever I can. It’s a little difficult to get to Rethymno. I have my wife here too. I have to see what the timetable is like.”
