Greece’s economy may be showing signs of promise, but when it comes to population growth it’s another story entirely.
Recently released statistics have revealed that people are dying at an alarming rate, while newborns are getting fewer and fewer.
Last year saw the gap between deaths and births increase higher than it ever has, with 124,501 people passing away – a stark contrast to the 88,553 that were brought into the world. Births in Greece reached a new low as they dropped below the 90,000 average, while deaths had never before exceeded the 124,000 mark, reports naftemporiki.gr.
On a yearly basis, births dropped by 4.7 per cent in 2017 when compared to the year before, while deaths increased by a similar percentage at 4.8 per cent.
The drop in birthday is not reflective of unions however, as marriages in Greece continue to take place commonly. Over 50,000 marriage ceremonies were recorded in 2017, with events divided between religious (24,975) and civil (25,163).
