Antonios Sykaris and George Marinos are the two Greeks that conquered Manaslu, the eighth highest mountain in the globe, the highest peak of the Nepalese Himalayas.

Manaslu summit sits at 8,163 meters (26,781 ft) above sea level and is amongst the world’s highest not tomention one of the most difficult mountains to climb.

The four week trek is tormented by harsh weather conditions like strong snowstorms, constant wind and phenomena like avalanches that have cost many climbers their lives.

Both Sykaris and Marinos are members of the Greek association of climbers with 56-year-old Sykaris being the first Greek to conquer three mountains included in the “grand slam” of mountaineering, a list of 14 mountains that are higher than 8,000 meters. Sykaris climbed Everest in 2017 along with Mike Eumorfides and the Kanchenjunga together with Fotis Theocharis.

The duo began their long trip to Nepal in early September this year and enduring adverse conditions they reached the mountain top whilst struggling with their health.

Manaslu, ‘the mountain of the spirits’ as the locals refer to it, has claimed 64 lives so far and it was first conquered back in 1956 by Japanese Tomasio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu.
