In a recent list released by German company Movinga with the world’s 100 best destinations for finding a job Greece, and especially Athens, came last.

Mivinga used research date from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and Athens only garnered 3.79 points out of 10 but the reasons behind the low rating are even more depressing than the grading itself.

While each city’s final score is based on a triptych assessing economic health of businesses, living standards, and opportunities for young people, women and foreigners, Greece has scored extremely low in each of those categories separately.

  • Athens got less than 1 point (0.94 per cent) in terms of employment opportunities for young people, and 3.76 when it comes to new startups.
  • Meanwhile, metrics from the Hellenic Statistical Authority pinpoint the Greek capital as region in the country with the highest rate of unemployment (19.7 per cent) after Epirus in August.
  • Athens received only 1.93 points, in both employment opportunities for foreigners and in businesses’ economic health.
Living standards got the higher score of 4.56 points mainly due to well connected social networks and social life opportunities with Greek government efficiency scoring the lowest, a mere 0.34 points.
  • Women are not doing too bad in Athens in terms of general equality with a respectable grade of 5.90 points compared to other capitals, but in terms of women’s chances of rising to senior positions, it got just 3.25 points, Kathimerini reports.
