A 53-year-old Greek woman who was employed as a cleaner after doctoring her primary school certificate made headlines worldwide last week following the court’s decision that sentenced her to jail for ten years.

She was found guilty of defrauding the state-funded nursery she worked for, however, the cruelty of the judge’s decision sparked many negative remarks about Greece’s judiciary system. The woman, whose name remains unrevealed was released yesterday on health grounds pending a decision on her appeal against her sentence by the supreme court.

“Welfare came to my house and I was afraid they were going to take away my children. My husband and I were jobless,” she said adding that she was to find a job and be able to raise her children.

The woman’s daughter spoke to reporters outside the court thanking “all the people that had stood at my family’s side and supported them. I thank Greek Justice, which saw the injustice done to my mother. My mother was working all those years for us, everything we are today we owe to her,” she said.
