Former Greek Prime Minister and ex-leader of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) from 1996 to 2004 Costas Simitis has responded to allegations implicating him in a money-laundering scandal.

Simitis is currently being investigated regarding the acquisition of a C4I security system for the 2004 Athens Olympics, an accusation he has described as “slander”.

“Personal attacks can’t touch me,” he stated.

“It is dangerous for the public life of the country to be dragged into the mud while we are still in a crisis. The obligation of governors is to come up with policies for the future and not mud about the past,” he added.

Simitis attributed the accusations to the “pre-election period” and the opposition’s plan to slander the socialist party by digging into past leaders.

Former PASOK defense minister Yiannos Papantoniou is also under investigation since Monday in regards to repeated allegations of passive bribery during the acquisition of the C4I security system.
