There’s not enough discussion around menopause. Beyond hearing about hot flushes, maybe from a TV reference, little is known about it. Doctors rarely bring it up, and too often, patients dismiss the symptoms. The Food for Thought Network (FFTN) and The Greek Australian Women and Friends Around the World forum is hoping to change all that with an important discussion on “peri menopause and menopause” on Wednesday 9 June at 8.00 pm. The presentation will take place via zoom, and everyone is welcome to join for free.

Dr Magadalena Simonis, an acclaimed general practitioner and leading women’s health expert, hopes to bring her extensive and varied experience to the table.

An expert in her field, she has diverse experience as GP, government health advisor, primary care researcher with the University of Melbourne and a leading women’s health advocate.

She holds positions on several not-for-profit organisations bridging gaps across the health sector, whilst informing their health initiatives.

Dr Simonis is on the Expert Committee of Quality Care for the RACGP, President of the Australian Federation of Medical Women, Medical Women’s international Association (MWIA) Scientific and Research Subcommittee Co-Chair and chair of the MWIA Mentoring group.

Menopause is often branded “the change of life” as it marks the end of a woman’s reproductive life, but with it come an array of symptoms physical and psychological. It has long been a taboo subject that many people still find uncomfortable to talk about.

This has to change, and Dr Simonis’ seminal work is testament to the importance of having an open dialogue on the subject matter.

“My opinion was sought by RACGP on menopause treatments removed from PBS ‘it’s a gender equity issue not a fiscal one,” Dr Simonis said.

During her talk, she’ll unpack the various stages of menopause and offer expert advice to help women experiencing this transition as well as increase understanding of what it means to be menopausal.
