BBC2 aired a new documentary on 4 February; in an episode titled ‘Inside Europe — Ten Years of Turmoil’, BBC follows world leaders and European ministers around summits and conferences leading up to the financial disaster.

The second episode, ‘Going for Broke’, features Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy as well as former Greek Prime Minister Georgios Papandreou.

The film revolves around the EU’s efforts to prevent the near bankruptcy of Greece, an effort that included the implementation of strict austerity measures that brought the Greek people to their knees and nearly sank the European Union.

Germany’s finance minister Wolfgang Schauble, UK chancellor George Osborne and the controversial former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis also appear in the film, alongside a Donald Tusk, Francois Hollande and Matteo Renzi.

The film delves into the disagreements between leaders on the future of Greece as part of the European Union and whether or not it deserved to be saved. Rebuffed by the bank managers the leaders had to come with a decision. All the EU finance ministers were summoned, even the ones not in the Euro. If the Euro fell, the EU would crash with it.
